Visited Luxor when in Egypt eight years ago. Of course a trip into the kasbah and the bazaars is a must on an occasion like this. Well, I ended up in a carpet store, and having spent lots of time in arab countrys before, I didn´t expect to get out of there in a jiffy - and so I didn´t. I really was interested in a carpet, a so called gallery-carpet. From the beginning the dealer presented me with mint-tea, and lots of totally dreadful tourist carpets, which I of course commented for their beauty and quality - but of course that wasn´t what I was looking for. After buckets of tea, some water-pipe , more tea and lots of compliments, suddenly the dealer began to come up with the REAL carpets. Particullarily one caught my attention. It was knitted from baby camel wool on cotton base, and it was the most charming carpets I think I ever saw ( and mind you , I have been in
Iran too...). It is sooo full off oddities, that it looks like a living story told in a pictural language. So, now the price discussions commenced... After two hours we were close to a deal. After one more hour the carpet was mine at a price of 700 USD. My kids immediately declared me a real soccer, paying that much for a carpet, but still to this day it gives me enormous pleasure. I use to lie on the soft camel wool, looking at all the peculiarities in the knitting and the pattern, and for me it´s like a saga out of Thousand and One Night. I will never get tired of this carpet, and it has become one of my dearest possessions.
